Supporting School Communities to Develop the Building Blocks of Well-being (Building Blocks) project addresses the growing challenge of mental health and well-being among primary and lower secondary school students, teachers, and parents. It aims to foster emotional intelligence and resilience in schools by integrating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) through a whole-school approach. The project seeks to train teachers in play therapy techniques, develop a comprehensive SEL curriculum, and engage parents and local communities, creating a supportive environment that promotes well-being and enhances academic and social outcomes​.

Teachers as Play Therapists in Social and Emotional Learning

Teachers as Play Therapists in SEL focuses on developing a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme to train primary and lower secondary school teachers in play therapy techniques. It aims to enhance teachers’ skills in integrating Social and Emotional Learning into their classrooms. Activities include creating evidence-based modules, delivering training sessions, and designing practical activity plans, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment for students.

The project emphasizes developing a comprehensive Social and Emotional Learning curriculum tailored for teachers, parents, and students in primary and lower secondary schools. Through teacher training, parental engagement, and student-centered activities, the initiative fosters a whole-school approach to well-being. By equipping educators and families with the tools to support emotional intelligence, resilience, and positive social interactions, it creates a nurturing environment that benefits the entire school community.

Promoting and Assessing the Impact of the Building Blocks

Promoting and Assessing the Impact of the Building Blocks Whole-School Approach focuses on promoting, assessing, and ensuring the sustainability of the Building Blocks whole-school approach to Social and Emotional Learning. It includes developing impact assessment tools, creating promotional materials such as infographics, and hosting dissemination workshops. By engaging schools, parents, and stakeholders, the work package aims to evaluate project outcomes, enhance awareness, and ensure the long-term adoption of SEL practices in schools.​

OBJECTIVES AND TARGET GROUPS

The objectives of the Building Blocks project are:

    • Equip primary and lower secondary school teachers with play therapy techniques to effectively integrate Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into classroom environments.

    • Provide parents with practical strategies to support SEL at home, fostering a collaborative approach between schools and families.

    • Create an evidence-based, age-appropriate SEL curriculum for teachers, parents, and students.

    • Promote a comprehensive whole-school approach to SEL by involving all school staff, including administrators and support staff.

    • Collaborate with local communities and stakeholders to create a supportive network for SEL implementation.

    • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the project approach to SEL, ensuring continuous improvement and long-term benefits.

The target groups of the Building Blocks project are:

    • Teachers: Primary and lower secondary school teachers, providing them with play therapy training and SEL resources to enhance classroom practices.
    • Parents: Equipping parents with strategies and resources to support their children’s social and emotional well-being at home.
    • Students: Primary and lower secondary school students (aged 6 to 14), benefiting from an evidence-based SEL curriculum and activities that enhance emotional intelligence, resilience, and social skills.
    • School Staff: Engaging administrators and support staff to promote a whole-school approach to well-being.
    • Local Stakeholders: Collaborating with community members, policymakers, and other external stakeholders to create a supportive environment for SEL implementation​

Building Blocks brings together six partners from diverse countries and areas of expertise: Czech Republic (Rizika internetu a komunikačních technologií), Romania (TEAM4Excellence), Spain (Ayuntamiento de Quart de Poblet), Ireland (WeLearn Limited), Greece (1st Primary School of Rafina) and Turkey (Tevfik Serdar Anadolu Lisesi). RIKT

Rizika internetu a komunikačních technologií, serving as the coordinator of the Building Blocks project, also known as “Nebuď oběť!” (“Don’t Be a Victim!”), leads the initiative with its expertise in preventive education and digital safety. They specialise in developing educational resources and training programmes focused on digital safety, social inclusion, and emotional well-being. RIKT delivers training on safe internet use and raises awareness about online risks like cyberbullying, sexting, and phishing.

Located in Constanta, Asociatia TEAM 4 Excellence focuses on creating community-oriented educational tools and platforms. They develop and maintain e-learning platform, ensuring digital resources are accessible and user-friendly for all stakeholders. Ayuntamiento de Quart de Poblet is dedicated to promoting inclusive education and community well-being. This local public body leads impactful initiatives that design and implement strategies for emotional development and effective communication. Their work fosters social inclusion and provides valuable support for students and families within school communities.

WeLearn, based in Mount Nugent, is an educational organisation offering professional development and innovative programmes. They focus on designing and delivering training modules centred on mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and creative teaching practices. WeLearn’s innovative approach enhances the capabilities of school staff and supports resource development for educators and students.
