The Art of Navigation

This week, our volunteers led a fascinating workshop at Mihai Eminescu National College, Liceul Tehnologic Gheorghe Duca and Școala Gimnazială Nr. 30 Gheorghe Țițeica, focusing on the basics of maritime navigation. The goal was to help students understand how to determine a ship’s position and course while making the activity fun and interactive.

The workshop start with a clear explanation of key navigation terms, such as latitude, longitude and true course. Students learned how these are used to locate a ship’s position and guide its direction on a map. Volunteers explained the importance of accuracy in navigation to ensure safe travel at sea, making the concepts simple and easy to follow.

Students also explored the challenges faced by navigators, including the need for precision and quick decision-making in real-life situations. The highlight of the session was an exciting group activity. Working in teams, students practised finding ship’s position  and calculating their courses using the skills they had just learned. This friendly competition made the learning enjoyable and helped reinforce the information.

The students  said they enjoyed the mix of learning and teamwork. This workshop made navigation simple to understand and encouraged curiosity about the world of maritime travel.
