Social Media Workshops

On Monday, October 21, our volunteers hosted an insightful activity about social media at Mihai Eminescu National College and Liceul CFR. The session aimed to raise awareness about social media’s impact on our daily lives, how it affects different generations, and ways we can manage our usage more responsibly.

We began with an introduction to social media, providing a clear definition and offering examples of popular platforms. The participants were engaged in a conversation where we asked them whether they use social media, which platforms they prefer, if they post content, and if they’ve ever considered how much time they spend on these platforms. To give them a broader perspective, we explored the top 10 most-used social media platforms worldwide.

Next, we transitioned into a debate, centered on the question: “Is social media good or bad for our society?” The students were divided into teams and tasked with thinking of arguments for and against social media, sparking a lively discussion that allowed them to consider the benefits and drawbacks of these platforms.

Following the debate, we played a generational game where students learned about the technologies each generation grew up with. We explored how older generations experienced the rise of video games, the internet, and the emergence of social media, while the younger generation is growing up with advancements like artificial intelligence. This part of the activity helped students see how technology evolves across time and impacts each generation differently.

In conclusion, our activity not only highlighted the pervasive influence of social media but also encouraged students to critically reflect on their usage. Through discussion, debate, and interactive games, we explored how different generations engage with technology and how it shapes their lives. The participants walked away with practical strategies for balancing their screen time and fostering a healthier relationship with social media. By understanding the pros and cons, they can make more informed choices about how to use these platforms responsibly.
